THE BARCODE FIELD GUIDE

Identify a barcode from an image without uploading it

Can I identify a barcode without uploading the image?

BarcodeMate can read supported barcodes from a screenshot or photo on your device. Choose an image, drop it onto the page or paste a screenshot. The image, its filename and decoded content are not uploaded. You do not need an account.

How to identify a barcode image

  1. Open the barcode generator and select Identify an image.
  2. Choose, drop or paste an image. Supported image files include PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF and BMP; the file size limit is 20 MB.
  3. Read the detected barcode type and content. If the image contains several supported barcodes, the results are listed separately.
  4. If a barcode is missed, select the area around it and choose Scan selected area. Include the complete symbol and its surrounding white space.
  5. Select Clear image & results when finished. Closing and reopening the identification panel preserves the current image and results until they are cleared or the page is reloaded.

Which formats can it identify?

Supported readers include QR Code, PDF417, Data Matrix, Aztec, EAN/UPC, Code 128 and other listed variants. The identification panel has the current support summary. Generation and identification have different coverage: the number of formats available in the generator is not the number the reader can identify.

Blur, missing edges, very small symbols and unsupported formats can prevent a result. BarcodeMate reports a type only after successful decoding. A failed scan does not prove the image is invalid. Identifying a format does not certify a shipping label, product registration or industry document.

Is everything offline?

Decoding happens locally, but the browser still downloads the website and reader files. Public pages use visit analytics and anonymous feature counters as described in the privacy notice. Image identification does not save the selected image or decoded content to your barcode history.

The Create action opens a corresponding generator example. It does not automatically copy a decoded shipping payload or other specialist content into the generator.
